Getting Ready To Move: These Packing Tips Will Make It Easier

Ready To Move

Moving is stressful. In fact, for couples, it’s the kind of thing that can put a real strain on your relationship – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Packing smarter can make a big difference in how you experience your move, from the moment you start decluttering until the day you unpack your last box.

1. Use Your Vacation Skills

One of the most important things you can do when you’re moving is to ensure that you have ready access to the most important items and the best way to do that is to use your vacation packing skills.

Get out your luggage and pack some in-season clothing, key toiletries, and other items you use on a daily basis. Other items can be prioritized during the boxing phase, but you don’t want to be sifting through boxes for your pajamas or your hairbrush.

2. Declutter Your Space

The best time to declutter your home is when you’re getting ready to move, because once you’ve arrived in your new home, you’ll just want to get settled in.

During the packing process, though, most people are overwhelmed by just how much stuff they’ve acquired. Use that as motivation.

Clear out, rent a dumpster if you need to, or host a garage sale. Remember, if you didn’t use it in your old house, you won’t use it in the new one.

3. Make Use Of Storage

One of the biggest challenges of moving, especially on a tight timeline, is trying to pack and clean and stay calm through all of it – and the boxes don’t help with any of that. You can sidestep this issue by renting a storage unit to temporarily minimize clutter.

Most storage companies will sell you all the supplies you need to move, such as boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and labels, so consider this your one stop shop for a simpler moving process.

4. List Inventory And Priorities

Moving comes with a lot of paperwork, especially if you’re moving over long distances. You likely have contracts with the moving company, documentation about your new property, and veterinary information about any pets you’re traveling with, among other documents. Well, take this moving file with all the important papers and add a set of inventory lists to it. This will help you keep track of what’s in each box and prevent hours of shuffling décor around when what you need is a bath towel.

5. Open Me First

Its contents may look chaotic, but they’ll be exactly what you want when you arrive in your new place: hand and dish soap, a sponge, toilet paper, some plates and cutlery, scissors, snacks, and garbage bags.

You may actually have a couple of these essentials boxes, but the whole idea is that their contents will allow you to eat, shower, and deal with trash as soon as you arrive so that you have the energy to tackle the rest of the unpacking process.

Whether you’re moving a few blocks or across the country, the most important thing you can do is stay organized. Know where everything is and what order you’ll unpack it, who to contact about the electricity and internet, and where to forward your mail. If you document all those details and keep the notes on hand – and maybe put a copy on your phone as well – then everything (and everyone) will arrive in one piece.
